I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games: Zach Cregger

Los Angeles, Aug 10 (UNI) Filmmaker Zach Cregger is poised to resurrect "Resident Evil" with a vision that reverently preserves the franchise's intricate lore while steering clear of retelling its most familiar character arcs.
The director, who is rebooting the franchise for Sony, recently explained that although he’s “not breaking the rules of the games,” the movie depicts a story “outside of the characters of the games.”
“I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games,” he told Inverse.
“It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story,” added Cregger. “I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that”, reports DEADLINE.
At CinemaCon in March, Cregger echoed teased that his adaptation is “built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.”
Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, with "Euphoria" actor Austin Abrams currently in negotiations to star. “I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor,” he told Deadline at the time.
Since its debut as a 1996 Capcom (a Japanese video game company) video game, "Resident Evil " has inspired seven theatrical films that grossed over $1.2 billion, a 2021 reboot and brief 2022 Netflix series.
