Icy cold wave paralyses normal life in Himachal; black ice tightens grip

Shimla, Jan 11 (UNI) Normal life across Himachal Pradesh remained paralysed on Sunday as a severe icy cold wave swept through the state, pushing mercury sharply down and turning roads treacherous with black ice and thick frost sheets.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, minimum temperatures at several places stayed 2 to 6 degrees below normal, while dry weather conditions prevailed across the region.
The impact was most severe in tribal and high-hill areas, where black ice made roads extremely slippery, forcing authorities in Lahaul and Spiti to issue repeated travel advisories. Tourists were left confused as thick frost layers resembled fresh snowfall, while several waterfalls in higher reaches froze into solid ice statues, adding to the risk on mountain roads.
