Illegal encroachment aimed at making indigenous people minority in Assam: CM Sarma

Guwahati, July 12 (UNI) As the Assam government continued its drive to clear illegal encroachment in Goalpara district today, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that there is a larger conspiracy behind these illegal encroachments to change the demographic patterns in areas where the indigenous people are majority.
The chief minister said that there must be a study to ascertain if these illegal encroachments are encouraged by a section with vested interests for political reasons.
"If some people have lost their lands due to erosion, they should approach the concerned District commissioner of the district. We will give them lands. However, what we are seeing during the recent evictions is different. Today eviction is carried out in Paikan in Goalpara. But the encroachers are not from Goalpara; they are from Barpeta. During the eviction in Lakhimpur, we have seen that evicted people are from districts like South Salmara, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi. We cannot give them land in Lakhimpur," he said while questioning if these are done as part of a plan to change the demography in areas where indigenous people are majority for vote bank politics?
