India, Canada cooperating on tackling trans-national organised crime: MEA on Ottawa listing Bishnoi gang as terrorist entity

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) India and Canada are cooperating on fighting trans-national organized crime, which is of particular concern to both countries, the MEA said today, days after the Canadian government listed the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, answering questions on the subject, said that NSA Ajit Doval had held talks with the National Security and Intelligence advisor of Canada, Nathalie Drouin on September 18. “Both sides had held productive discussions as to how we can strengthen bilateral cooperation especially in the areas of counter terrorism, transnational organized crime, and information or intelligence exchanges. They agreed to strengthen security cooperation and further enforce existing mechanisms on engagement…. Trans-national organized crime is a particular concern to both countries. And all countries, in the world must come together to fight this menace.”
On September 29, the Canadian government listed the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity citing it as a transnational criminal organization operating primarily out of India. “They have a presence in Canada and are active in areas with significant diaspora communities. The Bishnoi Gang engages in murder, shootings and arson, and generates terror through extortion and intimidation. They create a climate of insecurity in these communities by targeting them, their prominent community members, businesses, and cultural figures. Listing the Bishnoi Gang will help Canadian security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies in combatting their crimes and making communities safer,” the Canadian government said.
