India eyes human missions in space and deep sea by 2027, says Jitendra Singh

New Delhi, Dec 16 (UNI): India plans to undertake human missions in outer space and in deep sea simultaneously by 2027, a feat achieved by only a few countries so far, Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh, said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a media conclave, Singh said the twin missions were part of India’s broader scientific roadmap for the next decade as the country moves towards its centenary year of Independence in 2047. He said the global focus would not only be on India’s achievements, but also on the systems and values through which those milestones are reached.
The Minister said India is preparing for a manned deep-sea mission under the Deep Ocean Mission as early as 2026, targeting a depth of 500 metres. This, he said, would lay the groundwork for future dives of up to 6,000 metres using the 'indigenous submersible Matsya'. In parallel, India is expected to send its own astronauts into space in 2027.
