New Delhi, Jul 7 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Indonesia on Tuesday marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations, with India and Indonesia signing 14 agreements and announcing six major initiatives spanning defence, maritime security, healthcare, agriculture, space, digital technology, critical minerals, education and cultural diplomacy, reinforcing the expanding scope of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The wide-ranging outcomes, announced after delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta, underscored the growing strategic alignment between the two Indo-Pacific democracies and their commitment to strengthening collaboration across security, economic and technological sectors.
A key highlight was the extension of the Framework Agreement on Cooperation in the Exploration and Uses of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes, reaffirming the longstanding partnership between the two countries in space research. The renewed agreement is expected to deepen cooperation through joint scientific research, technology sharing and capacity-building programmes.
Healthcare emerged as another major area of collaboration. India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and Indonesia's National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on medical product regulation to enhance regulatory cooperation and facilitate greater access to affordable, high-quality medicines. An implementation agreement on health workforce collaboration was also concluded to strengthen the training and capacity building of Indonesian doctors and healthcare professionals.
Reflecting the increasing strategic importance of resilient industrial supply chains, the two countries signed an MoU on cooperation in minerals and steel supply chains. The agreement seeks to promote collaboration in critical minerals, steel production and advanced manufacturing sectors that are vital for clean energy technologies and future industries.
Agriculture also featured prominently in the outcomes, with both governments signing an MoU on cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors. The agreement is expected to expand collaboration in sustainable farming, agricultural research and food security. Complementing this initiative, India announced it would supply 100 tonnes of high-quality DWR-162 wheat seeds to Indonesia to support its agricultural development.
Maritime cooperation received renewed impetus through the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding and Implementation Agreement on Maritime Safety and Security Cooperation. The renewed framework aims to enhance collaboration in maritime domain awareness, navigational safety and security across the strategically important Indian Ocean region.
Recognising the growing threat posed by natural disasters, India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Management signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation in disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and institutional capacity building.
Technology and innovation formed another important pillar of the partnership. The two countries concluded an MoU on cooperation in telecommunications technologies and services, along with an agreement on research, technology and innovation to promote collaboration in emerging technologies, scientific research and innovation ecosystems.
In a move aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Indonesia's General Elections Commission (KPU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate exchanges of best practices and expertise in election management and democratic governance.
Defence cooperation also received a major boost. India and Indonesia announced cooperation on the BrahMos missile system, reflecting deepening strategic trust between the two countries. They also concluded an Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation Agreement, further expanding defence-industrial collaboration and security ties.
Industrial cooperation was strengthened through a strategic joint venture between the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Indonesia's PT Krakatau Steel to establish a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia. In another important industrial initiative, India's Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), Midwest Ltds. and Indonesia's PT PERMINAS agreed to collaborate on the development of rare-earth magnets, a critical technology for electric vehicles, renewable energy and high-end manufacturing.
In addition to the agreements, the two leaders announced six significant initiatives designed to deepen people-centric and institutional cooperation.
India will assist in the conservation and restoration of the historic Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, reaffirming the shared civilisational heritage that has linked the two countries for centuries.
Indonesia will also deploy a liaison officer to the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), strengthening cooperation in maritime domain awareness and information sharing across the Indo-Pacific.
Education received a major boost with the announcement that the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore will establish a branch campus at Indonesia's Singhasari Special Economic Zone, marking a significant expansion of India's higher education presence in Southeast Asia.
The two countries will jointly commemorate the "Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy" to celebrate the centenary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's visit to Indonesia while honouring the enduring intellectual legacy shared with Indonesia's pioneering educationist Ki Hadjar Dewantara.
In the digital economy, Indonesia announced the launch of the Indonesia Open Network (ION), inspired by India's Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). The initiative is expected to encourage inclusive digital commerce and create new opportunities for businesses, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises.
The extensive package of agreements and announcements reflects the remarkable transformation of India-Indonesia relations since the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018. As influential maritime nations located along key Indo-Pacific sea lanes, both countries have steadily expanded cooperation across defence, trade, connectivity, healthcare, energy, digital technologies and regional security.
Indonesia remains India's largest trading partner within ASEAN, while New Delhi and Jakarta continue to coordinate closely through regional and multilateral forums including ASEAN, the East Asia Summit, the G20 and Indian Ocean institutions. The outcomes of Prime Minister Modi's visit highlight the determination of both governments to elevate their historic civilisational relationship into a comprehensive strategic partnership equipped to address emerging geopolitical, technological and economic challenges while contributing to peace, stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific.
