India's semiconductor mission to train 85000, drive USD 110 bn market

Bengaluru, Mar 27 (UNI) India’s semiconductor sector is set for a massive expansion with the government spearheading efforts to build a workforce of 85,000 professionals and propel the semiconductor market to an estimated $100-110 billion by 2030.
"Our Nano Centres are set to create a semiconductor-ready workforce of 85,000 professionals. India's semiconductor market currently stands at $45-50 billion and is projected to reach $100-110 billion by 2030," MeitY Secretary S Krishnan said at the inauguration of India's first Nano Electronics Roadshow here on Thursday.
"We are expanding the design-linked incentive scheme beyond startups and MSMEs, attracting global talent, and co-investing with venture capitalists to scale up semiconductor design and manufacturing," he added.
Krishnan also highlighted that the initiative is a vital step in India's semiconductor mission, which is backed by extensive government funding. "With nearly 70-75% of investments in semiconductor facilities coming from taxpayer money, every Indian is a stakeholder in this mission. In fact, 20% of the global semiconductor design workforce is in India. Ensuring its success is a collective responsibility shared by the government, industry, and academia," he stated.
Abhishek Singh, MeitY Additional Secretary, highlighted the transformative impact of nanoelectronics, noting that a single smartphone contains nearly 20 billion transistors, each smaller than a human hair. "This advancement is propelling developments in supercomputing, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence, enabling faster and more energy-efficient computing," he said.
Singh further elaborated on the role of the India AI mission and the INUP programme, which are enabling startups, entrepreneurs, and researchers to solve real-world challenges. "With the pioneering efforts of IISc, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and others, we are ensuring India remains a global leader in the deep-tech revolution," he added.
The roadshow also showcased 48 advanced technology demonstrations by students from the Nano Centres. The event served as a platform for industry-academia collaboration, facilitating the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at fostering research partnerships and technological advancements.
India's first Nano Electronics Roadshow marked a significant step in the nation’s semiconductor journey, providing a crucial platform to bridge research with real-world applications. The event celebrated and recognised groundbreaking innovations, reinforcing India’s growing leadership in electronics and semiconductor technology.
The Nanotechnology Initiatives Division of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) — Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Kharagpur, and Guwahati — hosted India’s first Nano Electronics Roadshow at the National Science Seminar Complex, IISc Bengaluru, on Wednesday.
Aimed at bolstering India's self-reliance in semiconductors, the roadshow featured over 100 intellectual properties (IPs), more than 50 cutting-edge technologies, and innovations from over 35 promising startups. These efforts were supported by six state-of-the-art nanoelectronics centres established across the country. UNI BDN SSP
