Iran says regional meeting on Afghanistan only intended for exchanging views, not for mediation of Pakistan-Taliban tensions

Tehran, Dec 12 (UNI) Mohammad Reza Bahrami, director general for South Asia at Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has said that the upcoming regional meeting on Afghanistan in Tehran is intended to provide a forum for the exchange of views among participating countries, and as such will not be a platform for mediating hostilities between Pakistan and the Taliban.
Iran's Foreign Ministry earlier confirmed that Tehran would host the gathering next week to discuss "developments related to Afghanistan." Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Iran hoped the meeting could play a constructive role in "strengthening cooperation and reducing tensions," a reference to the recent deterioration in relations between Islamabad and the Taliban.
Speaking to Iranian state media, Bahrami clarified that mediation is not on the agenda. "Our goal in this meeting is to create space for exchanging views and presenting perspectives among the special representatives of Afghanistan's neighbouring countries," he said. The Islamic Republic, he added, aims to "strengthen convergence and mutual understanding regarding relevant developments."
