Jobs sought, lathis received: Apprentice linemen’s protest in Patiala ends in police action

Chandigarh, Jun 5 (UNI) A protest by apprentice linemen seeking employment opportunities turned tense in Patiala on Friday after police intervened to disperse demonstrators gathered outside the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) headquarters. Several protesters were allegedly baton-charged, and around ten individuals were taken into custody during the operation.
Members of the 2,600 Apprentice Linemen union had been staging a sit-in outside the power utility’s headquarters, demanding recruitment and implementation of assurances they claim were previously given by the government and departmental authorities. The confrontation erupted when police attempted to clear the protest site, leading to clashes and allegations of excessive force.
Union representatives said the apprentices had completed the required technical qualifications and had been awaiting recruitment for a considerable period. According to union leader Akash Kamboj, the government had earlier indicated that candidates would be considered eligible for employment after clearing a Punjabi language qualifying examination.
