Kashmir higher catchments, including Gulmarg and Sonamarg, receive fresh snowfall

Srinagar, Jan 21 (UNI) The higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley, including the famed tourist destinations of Gulmarg and Sonamarg, received fresh snowfall overnight, officials said.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, scattered light to moderate rain and snow are forecast across Jammu and Kashmir over the next 48 hours.
On January 22, the plains of Jammu are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall, while several areas in Jammu and Kashmir, including the higher altitudes of the Chenab Valley and the Pir Panjal Range, are likely to witness light to moderate snowfall.
Another spell of light to moderate rainfall in the plains and snowfall across various regions of Jammu and Kashmir is anticipated on January 23.
The weather is predicted to remain mostly dry from January 24 to 28. However, there is a slight chance of light rain and snow in isolated locations between January 29 and January 31.
The higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley, including the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, received 9 mm of snowfall, while the picturesque Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district also received moderate snowfall overnight, much to the delight of the tourists staying there. Several parts of Kashmir experienced overnight rainfall.
The vehicular traffic on the Gurez-Bandipora road has been suspended following a fresh snowfall on Razdan Pass in north Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the night temperature rose across all the weather stations of the valley and recorded 3°C to 5°C above normal during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. The day temperature recorded on Monday was also 4°C to 8°C above normal across the Kashmir Valley.
Srinagar recorded a low of 1.0°C against the -3.2°C the previous night, and this was 3.3°C above the average for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during the period.
After remaining the coldest place, the night temperature at the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district improved significantly, settling at -3.2°C against the -7.8°C on Monday. This was 5.2°C above the normal for the Valley of Meadows during this period of the season.
The minimum temperature at Pahalgam also witnessed a rise and was recorded at -2.2°C against the -6.4°C the previous night. This was 4.7°C above normal for the Valley of Shepherds during the period.
Qazigund on the Srinagar Jammu national highway had a low of -1.6°C against the -3°C the previous night, and it was 2.7°C above normal for the gateway to Kashmir during the period, the MeT office said.
For the first time during the winter season, Kupwara recorded 1°C against the -1.4°C recorded the previous night, and this was 3.7°C above normal for the frontier district of North Kashmir during this period of the season.
The picnic spot of Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of -1.4°C against the -2.4°C the previous night, and it was 2.3°C above the average for the picnic spot during the period.
