LS erupts in fiery debate over SIR, democracy and institutional integrity

New Delhi, Dec 9 (UNI) In a high-voltage Lok Sabha session on Tuesday, the government’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ignited a fierce and impassioned debate, laying bare the stark political divides over the issue.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi set a dramatic and urgent tone, invoking the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi to warn of rising threats to the nation's democratic foundations. He charged that divisive forces were at work to dismantle the very fabric of democracy, directly accusing the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of infiltrating key institutions, including the CBI, Enforcement Directorate and the Election Commission (EC). “The RSS fundamentally does not believe in equality,” Gandhi asserted, warning that undermining elections amounted to an act of 'vote chori' and was the "biggest anti-national act."
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju interrupted, accusing the Congress MP of straying from the debate's topic, but Gandhi’s speech was marked by a promise of retaliation. He was later accused by BJP MP Sambit Patra outside Parliament of issuing unprecedented threats to the EC, warning them they would "not be spared" if his party came to power—a remark Patra termed a sign of "arrogance and ignorance."
