Mahatma Gandhi Stadium renaming triggers political storm in Karnataka

Tumakuru, Jan 13 (UNI) The renaming of the Mahatma Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Tumakuru after Home Minister G Parameshwara has sparked a major political flashpoint in the district, with the BJP staging protests on Tuesday and accusing the Congress government of insulting the Father of the Nation.
The controversy erupted after the district administration removed the name of Mahatma Gandhi from the indoor stadium located near the Siddaganga Mutt's Shivakumara Swamiji Circle and installed a new name board reading "Dr G Parameshwara Indoor Sports Complex." The move, involving a venue that had carried Mahatma Gandhi's name for decades, triggered sharp reactions and widespread outrage.
Soon after the development came to light, BJP workers rushed to the stadium premises and staged a sit-in protest at the entrance, demanding immediate removal of the new name board. The protesters alleged that replacing Mahatma Gandhi's name with that of a serving minister was unacceptable and reflected the Congress government's disregard for national icons. They raised slogans against the state government and the district administration, accusing them of acting at the behest of the ruling party.
