MI, SRH pay tribute to Pahalgam attack victims

Hyderabad, Apr 23 (UNI) A solemn tribute marked the start of Match 41 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Wednesday, as players of Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, along with match officials, observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the recent terrorist attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir.
Both teams assembled before the start of play at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, standing shoulder to shoulder in a show of solidarity with the bereaved families. As a mark of protest and respect, all players and umpires sported black armbands. The match was conducted without the usual celebratory elements such as cheerleaders and fireworks.
Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya expressed his condolences, stating, "I would like to firstly pass my condolences to the victims of the terrorist attack. We, as a team and a franchise, condemn any such attacks."
Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins echoed similar sentiments, saying, "It has been heartbreaking for us as well. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families."
Security at the venue was significantly stepped up, with organisers ensuring the tribute proceeded in a dignified and orderly manner before the high-stakes encounter commenced.
Earlier, former India captain Virat Kohli took to social media to share his grief. In an Instagram post, he wrote, "Deeply saddened by the heinous attack in Pahalgam on innocent people. Heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. Praying for peace and strength to families of all those who lost their lives, and justice to be served for this cruel act."
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also issued a statement via its official X handle, posting, "Standing in solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. Prayers for the families who lost their loved ones in this gruesome attack."
The unified response from the cricketing community underscored the deep sorrow and national mourning following the tragic incident that shook the nation.
