Mizoram records surge in tourist arrivals, but foreign inflow hit by new restrictions

Aizawl, Sept 7: Mizoram witnessed a sharp rise in tourist inflows in 2024–25, drawing 5,24,784 visitors, out of whom 5,18,873 were domestic and 5,911 from abroad, according to state tourism department figures released on Saturday. The growth represents a 139.5 per cent increase compared to the previous financial year.
Tourist activity in the state has been recovering strongly since the pandemic slump. In the last five years—from 2020–21 to 2024–25—a total of 11,19,086 people, including 13,953 foreign nationals, visited Mizoram. Officials noted that while footfalls collapsed by over 87 per cent in 2020–21 compared with pre-Covid levels of 2019–20, the following year saw a sharp rebound, with arrivals rising by 544.89 per cent in 2021–22.
However, the growth trend for foreign tourists is expected to decline in the coming years due to the Centre’s decision to reimpose the Protected Area Regime (PAR) from December 2024. The move requires foreigners to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) before entering Mizoram and certain other northeastern states. Authorities admitted that several travellers, particularly from the United States, United Kingdom and Israel, who had initially planned visits to Mizoram, were denied PAPs by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and deported from airports in Delhi and Mumbai.
