MoD Clears First Large-Scale Solar Power Project on Defence Land at UP's Sitapur

New Delhi, Jun 9 (UNI) In a landmark move aimed at bolstering energy security and advancing India's clean energy ambitions, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the establishment of a 250 MW Solar Power Project with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on approximately 850 acres of vacant defence land at Sitapur (Ex-Cantonment) in Uttar Pradesh.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) described the initiative as the first large-scale renewable energy project of its kind to be developed on defence land, marking a significant milestone in the optimum utilisation of surplus defence assets while supporting the country's transition towards sustainable energy.
The project, which will be implemented by NTPC Limited through a competitive bidding process, is expected to strengthen the long-term energy security of defence establishments across Uttar Pradesh while generating substantial savings in power procurement costs over its operational life.
