Nepal Army assumes command of security amid escalating Gen Z protests

Kathmandu, Sep 9 (UNI) The Nepali Army (NA) announced on Tuesday evening that it will take charge of security operations in Nepal from 10 PM, following a day of violence in Kathmandu and other cities that saw Gen Z protesters vandalize and set fire to several key government buildings, besides the homes of top leaders.
The Gen Z protests that had begun as peaceful demonstrations against corruption and a government decision to ban social media platforms, escalated into widespread clashes in Kathmandu and other parts of the country, with at least 19 youths being killed in police firing on Monday. Outraged over the deaths, the Gen Z protesters ignored curfew restrictions today and moved in thousands across the city, setting fire to the homes of top leaders. PM KP Sharma Oli resigned earlier in the day.
Several incidents of arson, vandalism and looting were reported despite curfews and heightened security presence in sensitive areas.
