Neuroscientists sued Apple of using copyrighted books to train its AI system, 'Apple Intelligence'

New Delhi, Oct 11 (UNI) Tech giant Apple was sued by two neuroscientists accusing the company of using thousands of copyrighted books without permission to train 'Apple Intelligence', its AI system.
The lawsuit was filed by Susana-Martinez Conde and Stephen Macnick, professors at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, New York.
They accused the tech giant of using 'Shadow Libraries' of pirated books to train Apple Intelligence. The lawsuit said that Apple utilized datasets comprising thousands of pirated books as well as copyright-infringing materials to train its AI system.
'Shadow Libraries' refer to unauthorized online repositories of copyrighted digital content, such as academic papers and e-books, that are available for free. These sites basically bypass paywalls and access restrictions, offering content that would otherwise be inaccessible or expensive, and are often in violation of copyright laws.
The lawsuit accuses Apple of pirating books 'Champions of Illusion: The Science Behind Mind-Boggling Images and Mystifying Brain Puzzles' and 'Sleights of Mind: What the Neuroscience of Magic Reveals About Our Everyday Deceptions' to train Apple Intelligence.
Apple Intelligence is an artificial intelligence system developed by Apple Inc. It was announced in 2024 as a built-in feature of Apple's iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, which were announced alongside Apple Intelligence.
It consists of both an on-device model and a cloud model running on servers primarily using Apple Silicon (which is Apple Inc.'s line of custom-designed Arm-based processors (SoCs).
The lawsuit also said the day after Apple officially introduced Apple Intelligence, the company gained USD 200 billion in value, which is the single most lucrative day in the history of the company.
