7th Act East Business Show kicks off in Meghalaya

Shillong, Mar 25 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated the 7th Act East Business Show at State Convention Centre here and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “strong will” in pushing the North Eastern States forward.
The three-day event, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Meghalaya government, aims to strengthen trade and economic ties with Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal (BBIN) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Inaugurating the three-day business show, Sangma stressed on the need to create zones to determine partnerships with states and take up a targeted approach to leverage the partnerships.
The Chief Minister said India has showcased great political will and potential to take development to the next level.
“There is a very strong political will that is pushing the agenda of taking the North Eastern region forward,” he said, reiterating his belief on how the North East can contribute to furthering economic ties between BBIN and ASEAN nations.
“This strong will and desire of developing and pushing forward the North eastern region of the country comes all the way from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Chief Ministers of the North Eastern states and also at the level of bureaucrats, officials and administration,” Sangma pointed out.
Welcoming delegates from countries including Australia, Bhutan, Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and the UAE, Sangma highlighted Meghalaya’s strategic proximity to BBIN and ASEAN, positioning the state as a potential hub for trade, commerce, and connectivity.
“This event is not just a platform for industrialists, leaders, policymakers, and entrepreneurs but also an opportunity to build partnerships and foster mutual understanding,” Sangma said.
However, he said that there cannot be one Act East Policy for the entire North East region. “Every zone and every state in the North East is unique so therefore specific targets and strategies for every zone or state should be created,” Sangma added.
Noting that Meghalaya’s growth rate has surpassed the national average in recent years, the Chief Minister attributed this success to government policies, community involvement, and initiatives supporting young entrepreneurs.
“Our government has been working tirelessly to develop policies that foster economic expansion, attract investments and create new opportunities for business,” Sangma said, adding that the state is working towards becoming a mer driver in regional economic cooperation.
Underlining that growth must come with sustainability, the Chief Minister said, “Sustainability can come only if we work closely with environment, culture, tradition and the community and as a government we have believed that while growth is important respecting these different aspects of environment, culture, tradition and community id very crucial as we move forward.”
The Chief Minister also reiterated his government’s commitment to strengthening global partnerships and look forward to collaboration specially in healthcare training, IT, Tourism, agri-business etc while encouraging investments in sectors like agriculture, textiles, health and renewable energy.
