Railway ministry asks Meghalaya govt to refund Rs. 209.37 crore

Shillong, Mar 4 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday informed that the North Eastern Frontier Railway (NEFR) has sought a refund of Rs. 209.37 crore sanctioned in 2017 for land acquisition for the railway project.
“The money (from the centre) was placed before the Deputy Commissioners. The purpose of this money was for land acquisition, which could not take place due to local resistance and the money is lying unutilised. We received a letter from NEFR on December 17, 2024 asking us to refund the amount lying unutilised for almost 7-8 years,” Sangma said while replying to volley of queries during the Question Hour in the Assembly.
Several pressure groups have opposed the railway network in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills areas of Meghalaya fearing influx of illegal migrants..
