Kolkata, July 7 (UNI) The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday dealt with three separate urgent mentions involving Trinamool Congress leaders and granted different relief in each case.
While the court rejected an urgent hearing plea by Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra, it agreed to hear former state minister Sujit Bose's bail petition later in the day.
Meanwhile, the anticipatory bail plea of former Kolkata Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh is likely to be heard on Thursday.
Mahua had approached the High Court seeking legal protection after alleging that she was attacked with eggs, bricks and burnt brinjals during a political programme in Nadia's Kaliganj on July 1.
Her counsel, Ayan Bhattacharya, sought an urgent hearing before Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya.
Rejecting the request, the judge observed, "Such cases are being filed in gallons."
He said the petition could be filed and would be heard in due course following the prescribed procedure.
The MP had earlier obtained the court's permission to file the petition, alleging that while the police were actively pursuing an FIR registered against her, they had failed to act on her complaints regarding the alleged attack.
Moitra has accused BJP workers of surrounding the party office, hurling raw eggs and raising slogans against her during a preparatory meeting for the July 21 programme.
She also alleged police inaction despite the incident unfolding in their presence.
In a separate matter, former Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate, sought an urgent hearing of his bail plea.
His counsel, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, mentioned the matter before the court, which agreed to hear it at 2 pm on Tuesday.
Former Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh, who has sought anticipatory bail in connection with the alleged land scam, also requested an early hearing.
However, Justice Joy Sengupta declined the plea, observing that many cases involving ordinary citizens were pending.
The matter is expected to be heard on Thursday.
