Steps afoot to mitigate floods, says Meghalaya CM

Shillong, Mar 11 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday said that steps were afoot to mitigate the impact of floods caused by heavy rainfall in the plain areas in the State.
Replying to queries during the Question Hour in the assembly, Sangma said that the government was working on a weather forecasting system integrated with new technologies to better predict major flash floods or cloudbursts.
“Multiple steps are being taken. Wherever interventions are possible, whether through the water resources department, the soil and water conservation department or the forest department, various measures have been implemented in different areas. Of course, these are not completely foolproof, as weather conditions today are quite unpredictable,” he said.
