SILF unveils book highlighting role of lawyers in modern India

New Delhi, Jan 15 (UNI) In a landmark event celebrating India’s legal heritage, the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) on Wednesday launched a groundbreaking publication titled Lawyers in the Freedom Struggle and in Independent India (1872–2022).
Authored by Dr Lalit Bhasin, President of SILF and a luminary in the legal fraternity, the book highlights the pivotal role of lawyers in shaping India’s history—from the fight for independence to the evolution of its democracy.
The book was unveiled by K.K. Venugopal, former Attorney General of India, who ceremoniously presented the first copy to R. Venkataramani, the Attorney General of India, at a programme here.
Themed Celebrating 75 Years of the Republic of India and the Constitution of India – Towards Viksit Bharat 2047, the launch brought together eminent members of the legal fraternity, policymakers, and scholars.
Speaking at the event, Lalit Bhasin said, “This book captures the indelible legacy of lawyers who have been at the forefront of India’s transformation. From the freedom movement to modern governance, the legal fraternity has been a cornerstone of our democracy.
It is a tribute to the 1.1 million lawyers practising in India today, who continue to ensure the wheels of justice turn for the benefit of all citizens. The next generation of legal professionals will lead India to its pinnacle of glory by 2047, marking 100 years of independence.”
In his address, Venugopal lauded the publication, stating, “This book underscores the invaluable contributions of lawyers, from the freedom struggle to shaping India’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Visionaries like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Arun Jaitley, and Sushma Swaraj exemplify how law can build a nation. Lawyers and judges remain the custodians of the rule of law, amplifying unheard voices and defending rights in our vibrant democracy.”
Receiving the first copy, Venkataramani reflected on the book’s profound significance, remarking, “The history of our Constitution is intertwined with extraordinary individuals—united by the powerful idea of freedom. Their relentless pursuit laid the foundation for the Constitution we hold today. For lawyers, freedom is more than a struggle; it is a timeless idea to be nurtured and carried forward.”
The book delves into the contributions of legal luminaries across 150 years, detailing their roles in India’s transformation. It highlights the involvement of 11 Presidents, 3 Vice Presidents, 9 Prime Ministers and Deputy Prime Ministers, 13 Lok Sabha Speakers, and 76 Cabinet Ministers—emphasizing the integral role of lawyers in shaping India’s political and constitutional landscape.
