Kiran Rao’s Tokyo trip hit by IndiGo flight chaos

New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) Filmmaker Kiran Rao’s international trip to Tokyo was thrown into chaos on Saturday as massive IndiGo flight disruptions left her and thousands of passengers stranded.
Rao, who spent over 11 hours stuck inside Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2, took to Instagram to share her frustration over repeated delays and unclear communication from the airline.
Sharing her experience on Instagram, Rao revealed she had been travelling for over 11 hours, time in which she should have already reached Tokyo, but was still stuck inside Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 without any confirmed update.
Adding humour to her frustration, she wrote, “By now (11 hours since I left home) I should’ve reached Tokyo, but it was nice to get to know Mumbai T2 really well, thanks to IndiGo. And now I’m checking on how Delhi is doing with GRAP II. Good day, all in all.”
The chaos comes amid nationwide operational disruptions, which have led to over 2,000 flight cancellations since Tuesday. IndiGo announced the cancellation of all domestic departures from Delhi Airport on December 5, 2025, citing severe operational challenges.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation stepped in on Saturday, invoking measures to cap airfares after an unprecedented price surge by airlines taking advantage of the cancellations. In a statement, the Ministry said it had taken serious note of unusually high fares charged by certain carriers and was using its regulatory powers to enforce fair and reasonable pricing across affected routes.
“In order to protect passengers from any form of opportunistic pricing, the Ministry has invoked its regulatory powers to ensure fair and reasonable fares across all affected routes,” the statement said.
The Ministry’s directive also mandated that IndiGo clear all pending passenger refunds by 8 pm on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Airlines were barred from charging rescheduling fees for affected travelers. To assist passengers, IndiGo must set up dedicated support and refund facilitation cells to process automatic refunds and arrange alternate transport without repeated follow-ups.
The disruptions have caused fares on domestic routes to spike 4–5 times above normal. For instance, the cheapest non-IndiGo economy flight from Delhi to Mumbai on Sunday was over Rs 22,000, while delayed IndiGo flights were selling at over Rs14,000.
