SC rejects plea against Maharashtra local body delimitation; says elections cannot be delayed further

New Delhi, Dec 1 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition challenging the validity of the delimitation process for local bodies in Maharashtra, making it clear that no further impediments will be allowed in conducting the long-pending elections in the State. A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi rejected the plea filed by petitioner Nikhil K. Kolekar, who questioned the delegation of powers by the State Election Commission (SEC) to divisional commissioners for approving the final delimitation proposals.
Senior Advocate Sudhanshu Choudhary, appearing for the petitioner, contended that the authority to approve constituency divisions lies exclusively with the SEC.
He argued that allowing government officers to exercise this power amounted to the Commission abdicating its constitutional responsibility.
