New Delhi, Feb 4 (UNI) Lok Sabha proceedings on Wednesday were adjourned till 12 noon following vociferous protests by Opposition members over the suspension of eight MPs and related issues, highlighting escalating tensions in the Parliament during the Budget Session.
As soon as the House convened, Opposition members erupted into slogans and sought to raise various concerns, leading to a chaotic atmosphere. Speaker Om Birla urged members to maintain decorum, respect the proceedings, and allow the Question Hour to continue. Despite the Speaker permitting one question and its supplementaries during a brief five-minute Question Hour, the continuous din forced him to adjourn the House till noon.
The uproar stems from events earlier on Tuesday when eight Opposition MPs—seven from the Congress and one from the CPI-M—were suspended for the remainder of the Budget Session due to unruly behavior. The suspension followed an incident on Monday afternoon when Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi was disallowed from quoting an article referencing an unpublished memoir of former Army Chief M M Naravane concerning the 2020 India-China conflict. This move triggered sustained protests and disruptions.
The suspended MPs—Hibi Eden, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Prashant Yadaorao Padole, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Dean Kuriakose (all Congress), and S Venkatesan (CPI-M)—were seen outside Parliament holding posters alleging that the Prime Minister is “compromised,” echoing accusations made by Rahul Gandhi during his media interactions on the India-US trade agreement.
Samajwadi Party MP Anand Bhadauria defended Rahul Gandhi, emphasizing that he voices the concerns of people opposing the ruling BJP. Bhadauria accused the government of trying to silence the Opposition by creating disruptions whenever national security issues are raised in the House.
