PM Modi honours Karpoori Thakur on birth anniversary, recalls his commitment to social justice

New Delhi, Jan 24 (UNI) ‎Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid homage to former Bihar Chief Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Karpoori Thakur on his birth anniversary, remembering him as a leader whose politics remained firmly centred on the upliftment of the marginalised and weaker sections of society.

‎In a post on X, the Prime Minister described Karpoori Thakur as a “Jan Nayak” whose life and work continue to inspire generations. “I bow respectfully to former Bihar Chief Minister and Bharat Ratna Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur ji on his birth anniversary. The upliftment of the exploited, deprived, and weaker sections of society was always at the centre of his politics,” PM Modi said.
‎Highlighting Thakur’s personal qualities, the Prime Minister said his simplicity and dedication to public service made him a memorable and exemplary figure in Indian politics. “He will always be remembered and emulated for his simplicity and commitment to serving the people,” he added.
‎Karpoori Thakur, popularly known as “Jan Nayak,” was a prominent socialist leader and a two-time Chief Minister of Bihar. Born on January 24, 1924, he was known for his austere lifestyle, grassroots connections, and strong advocacy for social justice. His policies focused on empowering backward classes and improving access to education and opportunities for disadvantaged communities.
‎In recognition of his lifelong contribution to social equality and public life, the Centre posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, on Karpoori Thakur in 2024. The decision was widely seen as an acknowledgment of his role in shaping inclusive politics and giving voice to the marginalised.
‎Leaders across party lines have often cited Karpoori Thakur’s legacy as a benchmark for ethical and people-centric governance. The Prime Minister’s tribute on his birth anniversary underscores the continued relevance of Thakur’s ideals in contemporary political discourse, particularly at a time when social justice and inclusive development remain key themes in national policy debates.
