PM Modi condoles passing away of Padma Shri French Indologist Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat

New Delhi, Dec 31 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of distinguished French Indologist Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat, saying the Padma Shri awardee would be remembered for his exemplary efforts to popularise Sanskrit studies.
In a post on X, the PM said:
“Dr. Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat will be remembered for his exemplary efforts to popularise Sanskrit studies, especially in the field of literature and grammar. He was deeply connected with India and Indian culture. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and friends in this hour of grief.”
The Indian Embassy in France said:
“Deepest Condolences on the passing away of Padma Shri awardee Mr Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat, a distinguished French Indologist & illustrious scholar in the field of Sanskrit literature and traditions.
“His contribution in the field of Sanskrit literature, his scholarly works on Sanskrit grammar through the ancient texts of Patanjali, and on the heritage of temples in Hampi has made a profound impact on understanding of the civilizational history that India offers to the world.”
Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat passed away in Paris following illness at the age of 89.
He’s survived by his wife Dr. Vasundhara Kavali Filliozat, a noted Art Historian and Epigraphist & a recipient of the Kannada Rajyotsava Award, two daughters Manonmani and Bhamathi, grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends
Dr. Filliozat used to conduct research in several fields of Indology, Sanskrit grammar (Vyakarana), poetry and poetics, Tantra, especially the Sanskrit literature of Shaivasiddhanta School, history of Indian architecture and temples.
His work often emphasized the deep cultural connections between Europe and India, particularly through the study of Sanskrit. His research extended into various fields such as Panini's grammar, Shaiva Siddhanta, and the history of Indian art and science.
