New Delhi, July 19 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed sadness at the passing away of Vietnam’s long-serving leader Nguyen Phu Trong.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said India stands in solidarity with the people and leadership of Vietnam in this hour of grief.
“Saddened by the news of the passing away of the Vietnamese leader, General Secretary H.E. Nguyen Phu Trong. We pay our respects to the departed leader. Extend our deepest condolences and stand in solidarity with the people and leadership of Vietnam in this hour of grief.”
Vietnam's ruling Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong died on Friday after holding the country's most powerful position for 13 years. He was 80.
The announcement came days after the government said he was stepping back to focus on his health and had handed duties to President To Lam.
As the general secretary of Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party since 2011, and also holding the post of president, Trong was seen as one of the country’s most powerful leaders in decades.
According to an official statement released on Friday, Trong died "due to old age and serious illness".
