New Delhi, Feb 4 (UNI) Hours before the swearing- in ceremony of new Chief Minister in the North- Eastern state Manipur, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday revoked President's rule in the state.
According to a gazette notification issued by the Minstry of Home Affairs on February 4, "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of article 356 of the Constitution, I, Droupadi Murmu, President of India hereby revoke the Proclamation issued by me under the said article on the 13th day of February, 2025, in relation to the State of Manipur with effect from the 4th day of February, 2026."
President's rule was imposed in the state last year on February 13, after prolonged political uncertainty and law and order challenges.
According to BJP's Manipur unit, the swearing-in ceremony of Yumnam Khemchand as the Chief Minister is scheduled to take place on Wednesday evening at 6 pm at the Lok Bhavan.
The party has expressed confidence that under his leadership, the state is set to move ahead on the path of peace, development, and good governance, steering into a new era of stability and progress.
Y Khemchand Singh was elected as the new leader of the BJP Legislature party at a meeting held in the national capital om Wednesday.
Khemchand had won the elections earlier from Singjamei constituency as the saffron party's candidate, and was earlier the Speaker of the Manipur Assembly during the N Biren Singh government.
Notably, all the BJP MLAs and other constituent partners of the BJP the NPP and NPF have been in the national capital since Feb 1 to discuss the leadership issue.
It was on Tuesday that the party's Parliamentary Board had appointed Tarun Chugh as the central observer to oversee the process of electing the BJP legislative party leader in Manipur, which is a formal step in preparing for government installation.
With the constitutional timeline approaching, pressure has mounted on the ruling alliance to arrive at a decisive political arrangement.
In the last state assembly polls held in 2022, the BJP had bagged 32 seats, a seat more than the majority mark.
The crisis in the state had started on May 3, 2023, when a conflict between two communities - Meteis and Kukis - started, resulting in deaths of people from both communities, targeted attacks and communal rioting displacing large numbers of people from both communities. UNI APS JRC
