Khalistani extremist group claims responsibility for Sirhind rail blast

Chandigarh, Jan 24 (UNI) A Khalistani extremist organisation has claimed responsibility for the blast that damaged a freight train engine near Sirhind in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district, days ahead of Republic Day. The explosion occurred on a railway line late Friday evening, leaving the locomotive pilot injured and causing temporary disruption to rail traffic.
According to preliminary details, the incident took place around 9:50 pm when a goods train was moving towards Ludhiana on a newly constructed rail track near the Khanpur railway crossing. The line is part of a dedicated freight corridor designed for cargo operations. The blast was powerful enough to damage the engine and destroy a section of the railway track, with track components and sleepers scattered at the site.
Soon after the incident, a letter surfaced on social media in which a Khalistani extremist group claimed responsibility for the explosion. In the message, the group stated that the blast was intended as a warning and referred to it as a “trailer,” while also making further threats. Authorities have said the authenticity of the letter and the claims made in it are being verified and should not be treated as confirmed at this stage.
