Himachal begins Chinar plantation initiative to boost green cover

Shimla, June 5 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today launched the first phase of a Chinar plantation drive from his official residence, Oak Over, on the occasion of World Environment Day, underscoring the state's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The plantation drive aims to enhance green cover across the state and create greater public awareness about environmental protection. The Chinar tree, known for its majestic appearance, dense shade and ecological significance, has been identified as suitable for Shimla's climatic conditions.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister also released four publications focusing on forestry, environmental management and eco-tourism. These included "Van Bodh", a field handbook prepared for frontline forest personnel; "Environmental Management and Regulations", authored by Head of Forest Force Himachal Pradesh Dr. Sanjay Sood; "Forestry Projects: Forest Conservation, Livelihood Improvement and Integrated Development", highlighting initiatives being implemented under the JICA, KfW and IDP projects; and a coffee table book on 75 ecotourism sites of Himachal Pradesh showcasing the state's prominent eco-tourism destinations.
