Declining female fertility causing India to age faster: Expert

Pune, May 14 (UNI) The female fertility level in India has dropped below replacement level sooner than in many developed countries, causing premature ageing of the population said Dr Naresh Purohit , advisor for National Reproductive and Child Health Programme (RCH) in a press release here today.
Sharing his insight into this issue of rapid aging challenges , executive member of the Federation of Reproductive Health Services-India (FRHS - India), Dr Purohit underlined the fact that declining fertility, not rising life expectancy, is causing India to age faster.
"Rising ageing population shortens window of opportunity, leads to reduced dividends that could be reaped in the country. Close to 80 per cent of the change in the older population is happening due to declining fertility rather than rising life expectancy in India" he said
