Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif says ceasefire agreement with India marks 'new beginning' in resolution of issues

Islamabad/New Delhi, May 10 (UNI) Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today said the ceasefire agreement with India marks a “new beginning” in resolving issues that have plagued peace and security in the region – indicating the Kashmir issue.
In a post on X, the Pakistan PM expressed gratitude to US President Trump for his “proactive role” in facilitating the ceasefire agreement with India.
“We thank President Trump for his leadership and proactive role for peace in the region.
“Pakistan appreciates the United States for facilitating this outcome, which we have accepted in the interest of regional peace and stability.
“We also thank Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their valuable contributions for peace in South Asia.
“Pakistan believes this marks a new beginning in the resolution of issues that have plagued the region and prevented its journey toward peace, prosperity and stability,” he said.
The Pak PM’s statement comes as the US today said the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan was "brokered" by Washington.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement headlined ‘Announcing a U.S.-Brokered Ceasefire between India and Pakistan’, said that US Vice President JD Vance and he had been engaging with the top leadership of India and Pakistan over the past two days, which led to the ceasefire agreement.
“Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.
“I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.
“We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”
However, Indian sources said that
“The stoppage of firing and military action between India and Pakistan was worked out directly between the two countries.
“The Pak DGMO initiated the call this afternoon after which discussions took place and understanding reached.
“There is no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any other place.”
