Parliamentary panel seeks statutory status for NSC, flags fault lines in India's data system

New Delhi, Dec 3 (UNI) A parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance has called for a sweeping overhaul of India's statistical architecture, recommending that the National Statistical Commission (NSC) be granted statutory authority and empowered as the nodal body for all official data standards.
Currently, India's statistical architecture is de-centralised, multi-tiered, coordinated by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) at the national level, which includes the National Statistical Office (NSO).
The recommendations were presented in Lok Sabha by Committee Chairperson Bhartruhari Mahtab through the panel's 27th Report on the "Performance Review of the National Statistical Commission."
