PIL in SC seeks court-monitored probe into child deaths from toxic cough syrup

New Delhi, Oct 7 (UNI) Following multiple child deaths reported in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, allegedly due to the consumption of contaminated cough syrups, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking an independent, court-monitored investigation and a comprehensive overhaul of India’s drug safety framework.
The petition, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, urges the Supreme Court to constitute a national judicial commission or expert committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to conduct a thorough inquiry into the manufacture, testing, and distribution of toxic cough syrups found to contain diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) — industrial chemicals known to cause fatal poisoning.
According to the PIL, recent incidents in Shivpuri (Madhya Pradesh) and Barmer (Rajasthan) have raised serious alarm after several children reportedly died following the consumption of Coldrif Cough Syrup, manufactured by M/s Sresan Pharma Pvt. Ltd., a Tamil Nadu-based pharmaceutical company.
