Poet Srijato surrenders in 'Abhishap' controversy, court grants bail amid BJP protest fury

Krishnagar, May 16 (UNI) A seven-year-old controversy surrounding a poem on religion and symbolism returned to the spotlight on Saturday after poet and lyricist Srijato Bandyopadhyay surrendered before the Krishnagar district court in connection with a 2019 case accusing him of hurting Hindu religious sentiments through his controversial poem 'Abhishap' (The Curse).
The dramatic courtroom appearance followed the issuance of a warrant against the poet, triggering political protests and high tension outside the court premises as BJP supporters gathered, demanding strict action against him.
Bandyopadhyay appeared before the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashok Haldar and sought bail. The court granted him conditional bail on a bond of Rs 2,000, directing him to furnish a cash certificate and registered bond of Rs 1,000 each. The court also imposed restrictions on his movement, stating that he cannot leave his local jurisdiction without prior permission except for court-related purposes.
