Provide immediate aid to farmers affected by unseasonal rain: Congress' Sapkal asks Maha govt

Mumbai, May 14 (UNI) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Harshvardhan Sapkal on Wednesday demanded that the BJP-led state government should conduct loss assessments (panchnamas) due to the unseasonal rains and provide aid to the farmers.
Addressing a press conference at Tilak Bhavan, he said that farmers in the state were already in crisis, and they are now hit by yet another blow. Unseasonal rains in May have caused massive losses to farmers, but as this natural calamity struck farmers, the coalition government in the state remains asleep, he alleged .
Sapkal further said that the government has done injustice to farmers by shutting down the Rs 1 crop insurance scheme, which provided some compensation. The new insurance scheme based on crop harvesting is not in the interest of farmers. Scams have come to light in the new scheme, but the government lacks the courage to act against the culprits. If there are flaws in the scheme, they should be rectified, not scrapped.
