Punjab job protest escalates as apprentice linemen climb high-voltage tower in Patiala

Chandigarh, June 9 (UNI): The agitation by unemployed apprenticeship linemen in Punjab intensified on Tuesday after several members of the 2600 Unemployed Apprenticeship Linemen union climbed a high-voltage tower near Bhedpura village in Patiala, while dozens of other protesters gathered below and announced plans to launch an indefinite protest camp.
The latest development comes days after a confrontation outside the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) headquarters in Patiala, where protesters alleged that police resorted to a lathi charge during their ongoing demonstration. Several participants were reportedly injured in the incident and later received treatment at Rajindra Hospital.
Union members said the decision to move the protest site and scale the tower was taken after the administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Patiala, raising concerns among demonstrators that they could be removed from the area near the PSPCL office where they had been staging protests for several days.
