Researchers discover six new ginger species

Shillong, Sep 8 (UNI) Two researchers from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Bhopal have discovered six new six species in the Globba genus belonging to the ginger (Zingiberaceae) family in Meghalaya, Mizoram, and West Bengal.
These delicate plants, often referred to as "dancing girls” are commonly found in tropical regions such as Southeast Asia, India, and the Eastern Himalayas. They are called “dancing girls” due to the unique appearance of flowers that look like ballerinas with bowed heads and outstretched arms that appear to “dance” in the wind.
The discovery was made by researchers Ritu Yadav and Vinita Gowda from Bhopal-based Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) during their floristic surveys exploration during the monsoon months of August and September 2022, which is the flowering season for most of the Globba genus.
