SC grants bail to DHFL promoters Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan in Rs 57,000 cr bank fraud case

New Delhi, Dec 16 (UNI) The Supreme Court has granted bail to Dewan Housing Finance Limited (DHFL) promoters Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan in a Rs 57,000-crore bank fraud case, citing prolonged pre-trial incarceration and violation of their constitutional right to personal liberty and a speedy trial.
A Bench comprising Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice Vijay Bishnoi observed that the Wadhawan brothers have spent over five years in custody, even though the trial has not commenced, and all other co-accused in related cases have already been released on bail. The Court noted that the investigation against the two promoters stands completed.
Taking note of the scale of the prosecution material, the Bench recorded that the chargesheet runs into nearly four lakh pages, lists 736 witnesses, and is supported by 17 trunks of documents along with digital data exceeding two terabytes.
