SC seeks ECI response on plea for publishing exact polling figure on voting day

SC seeks ECI response on plea for publishing exact polling figure on voting day

New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Counsel of the Election Commission of India to take instructions from the EC office regarding an application filed by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) seeking to publish on its website immediately the absolute numbers of votes polled.
The Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, agreed to take up the matter during the day after an urgent mention was made by Advocate Prashant Bhushan.
The bench, headed by the CJI, sought the response of the ECI by May 24, to reply to the ADR’s query demanding to know the absolute numbers of votes polled data-wise, constituency-wise, to be made public immediately after polls and not after a gap of several days.
The NGO ADR also sought directions from the ECI to upload Form 17 C-1 on the ECI’s website. (Form C-1 contains the polled votes.).
Appearing for ADR ,advocate Prashant Bhushan alleged that the sharp increase between the initial and final voting percentages in the1st and 2nd phases of poling led to certain apprehensions.
Refuting the charges, the ECI said the petition was just an attempt to disrupt the polls. The election body, however, reluctantly agreed to file its response.
The vourt then posted the matter for May 24 as the next date of hearing, which will come before the vacation bench. UNI SNG GNK SSP
