Spain airlifts nationals from Hantavirus-hit cruise ship to military hospital in Madrid

Tenerife (Spain), May 10 (UNI) The first group of passengers evacuated from a cruise ship affected by Hantavirus outbreak has departed from Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, bound for Madrid, where they will be placed under medical supervision at a military hospital.
The passengers, all Spanish nationals, were flown out today from the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius, which had remained anchored off Tenerife after arriving earlier in the day. The evacuation marks the beginning of health authorities’ response to concerns over possible exposure to the virus onboard.
The cruise ship is carrying 149 people from 23 countries that suffered an outbreak of Hantavirus aboard which has killed three people. Four others have been confirmed to be infected and three further suspected cases have been reported.
