Standoff in Mumbai: Farmers’ protest escalates into dramatic suicide threats outside Mantralaya

Mumbai, Jul 9 (UNI) Maharashtra’s administrative power, Mantralaya, witnessed chilling scenes of desperation on Thursday as protesting farmers, demanding an unconditional loan waiver, took their agitation to extreme and life-threatening lengths. As the health of farm leader Ravikant Tupkar—who has been on a hunger strike—deteriorated, his supporters launched a fierce, high-stakes protest that brought the state capital to a standstill.
The agitation, which disrupted the peace in the state’s high-security VIP zone, saw protesters scaling trees outside the Mantralaya and threatening to hang themselves with ropes if the government failed to concede to their demands immediately.
The protesters, who arrived in Mumbai to escalate their agitation, alleged that the loan waiver schemes announced by the state government were "deceptive" and laden with restrictive conditions. They pressed for a comprehensive debt-free status for all farmers, along with immediate relief on pending issues, including crop insurance payouts and fair remunerative prices (FRP) for agricultural produce.
