Syrup deaths: Kamal Nath demands higher compensation

Chhindwara, Oct 12 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh’s former Chief Minister and Congress leader Kamal Nath said the state government should provide a higher amount of assistance to the families whose children died after consuming poisonous cough syrup.
Nath arrived here on a two-day visit and yesterday met the kin of the deceased children at Parasia, where he also addressed a press conference.
“This is an extremely sad and worrisome sequence of events, for which I hold the state government responsible. The medicines should have been tested, but the regime failed to do so. It is still unknown how many other medicines remain untested. These drugs have been sold not only in Madhya Pradesh but also across the country. Had timely action been taken, so many innocent lives would not have been lost. This is a colossal mistake and negligence on the part of the government. I have spoken with the Chief Minister regarding the issue of compensation, and I shall do whatever is possible from my side,” he said.
