TN: Dalit student’s hands hacked by upper-caste Hindu youths

Sivaganga (Tamil Nadu), Feb 13 (UNI) In a shocking incident, a 21-year-old college student belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) was brutally assaulted and his hands were hacked with a machete by three youths belonging to a dominant upper caste Hindu community at Melapidavur hamlet in Manamadurai taluk of Sivaganga district late on Wednesday evening.
Police sources said here on Thursday that the trio picked up a quarrel with the victim, identified as R.Ayyasamy, a third year BSc Mathematics student of Government Arts College at Sivaganga, after a Royal Enfield motorbike he was riding to his home from the college avoided hitting an elderly man who suddenly crossed the road.
When Ayyasamy questioned the elderly man for crossing the road without noticing the movement of the vehicles, the three youths who were standing nearby allegedly abused him with Caste slur and ridiculed him for ‘riding a costly motorbike.’
