Tokyo Electron to set up new semiconductor hub in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sept 9 (UNI) Tokyo Electron, the world’s fourth-largest semiconductor equipment manufacturer, has announced the establishment of a new development hub in Bengaluru, a move set to give a significant boost to India’s semiconductor ambitions and strengthen Karnataka’s position as a key player in the global chip ecosystem.
This was announced by Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge on social media.
The new hub in Bengaluru will focus on multiple strategic areas, including software development, equipment design, and simulation. In addition, the centre will engage in collaborative research with local universities, fostering stronger ties between industry and academia. This partnership aims to accelerate innovation, enhance technical expertise, and nurture homegrown talent in the semiconductor sector.
Tokyo Electron, which holds nearly 21% of the global market share and dominates the coater-developer segment, is expected to bring advanced technology, global best practices, and investment into Karnataka. Its presence is anticipated to complement India’s ongoing efforts to develop a self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem under national and state policies.
Karnataka already plays a leading role in the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) sector. The state contributes more than 35% of India’s ESDM exports and hosts over 400 chip design firms. Its ESDM Policy, aimed at fostering innovation, research, and investment, provides a conducive environment for companies like Tokyo Electron to expand operations and collaborate with local institutions.
Priyank highlighted that the hub aligns perfectly with the state’s vision of promoting advanced technology, enhancing semiconductor capabilities, and creating high-quality employment opportunities.
He noted that such initiatives will not only strengthen Karnataka’s global semiconductor footprint but also contribute to India’s broader goal of technological self-sufficiency.
This move is expected to attract further investments in the semiconductor sector, positioning Bengaluru — and Karnataka at large — as a preferred destination for global chip design and manufacturing ventures. It also signals India’s growing prominence in the high-tech manufacturing space, particularly in advanced electronics and semiconductors.
