US Lawmakers seek sanctions on Gen Asim Munir, Sharif govt over Rights abuses

Parwinder Sandhu
New Delhi, December 4 (UNI) In a strong rebuke of Pakistan’s military establishment, members of the United States Congress, led by Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal have written to Secretary of State Marco Rubio to impose targeted sanctions on Pakistan, including visa bans and asset freezes on military officials, citing what they described as an “escalating campaign of transnational repression” and a worsening human rights crisis under the military-backed government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir.
The bipartisan letter, made public on Wednesday, also seeks a formal response from the US administration on steps being taken to protect affected individuals in the United States and uphold human-rights standards in dealings with Islamabad. The letter links these incidents to a broader pattern of democratic backsliding in Pakistan, citing crackdowns on journalists, opposition figures and civil society.
