Wagner Moura makes history as first Brazilian to win Golden Globe for Best Actor

Los Angeles, Jan 12 (UNI) Wagner Moura has made history at the Golden Globe Awards by becoming the first Brazilian actor to win Best Actor in a Drama Film. The actor received the honor on Sunday night for his role in The Secret Agent during the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Moura’s win marks a milestone for Brazilian cinema, as no performer from the country had previously won in this category. While accepting the award, Moura reflected on the film’s themes of memory and generational trauma.
“The Secret Agent is a film about memory, or the lack of memory, and generational trauma. I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too. So this is to the ones that are sticking with their values in difficult moments,” Moura said, as reported by Variety.
He was nominated alongside renowned actors Joel Edgerton, Oscar Isaac, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, and Jeremy Allen White. Moura had previously earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role in the popular series Narcos.
This year’s nomination was itself historic, as he became the first Brazilian actor nominated in the Best Actor – Drama Film category.

In addition to Moura’s win, The Secret Agent earned major recognition at the Golden Globes, receiving nominations for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Foreign Language Film. It is the first Brazilian film to be nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama.
Set in Brazil in 1977 during the country’s military rule, The Secret Agent follows Moura’s character, a technology expert and political dissident, as he navigates persecution while resisting an oppressive system. The film is directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho.
The movie previously garnered acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, where Moura won Best Actor and the director took home Best Director. The Secret Agent also received the Art House Cinema Award and the FIPRESCI Prize, according to Variety.
The Golden Globes ceremony was hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, returning for her second consecutive year as host.
