Contrasting VAR calls overshadow Argentina's comeback win against Egypt

Philadelphia, July 8 (UNI) Two contrasting VAR decisions, one overturning an Egyptian goal after reviewing a challenge nearly 100 yards from goal and another refusing to intervene over a late penalty appeal, have overshadowed Argentina's dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, triggering fierce debate over the consistency of video review.
The controversial decisions left Egypt fuming after the defending champions recovered from a two-goal deficit by scoring three times after the 78th minute, with Enzo Fernández netting the stoppage-time winner to send Argentina into the quarter-finals.
The first flashpoint came in the opening half when Egypt's Mostafa Ziko appeared to have doubled his side's advantage after finishing off a swift counter-attack. However, referee François Letexier overturned the goal following a VAR review, ruling that Egyptian midfielder Marwan Attia had fouled Argentina defender Lisandro Martínez during the build-up.
