Four bins, One big shift: India’s new waste rules redefine how cities handle trash

New Delhi, April 8 (UNI) India’s waste management system is undergoing a significant overhaul with a new set of Solid Waste Management Rules coming into force from April 1, 2026 marking a decisive shift towards stricter segregation, scientific processing, and accountability across the waste chain.
In a statement, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) said the updated rules aim to strengthen waste management practices nationwide, with a strong focus on segregation at source, improved recycling, and minimising landfill dependence.
